I would definitely say that that their first album "The Principle of Evil Made Flesh" is a black metal album. A year or two later a kind woman at a record store handed me a bunch of black metal bands to check out and then a girl in college gave me a stack of cds. And I was like, “yoooo! Are you into black metal?!?! I’m trying so hard to get into black metal, do you guys have like shows and stuff? Who should I listen to?” And the kid, not looking at me, takes a long drag off his cigarette, exhales, and while still not looking at me, says “we don’t gather in public, certainly no ‘shows’ let me ask you, what black metal do YOU know? “ and all excitedly I say, “cRaDdLeOfFiLtH!” And the kid, still refusing to look at me, takes another long drag of his cigarette, and replies, “cradle of filth is like the -nirvana- of black metal” and turns away from me. One night while waiting for the bus, I looked over and I saw some broody looking metal kid wearing black metal everything. When I first got into black metal, or was trying to, (I’m old this was the late 90s) it was so hard to find any black metal where I lived or even learn about it.
